Calder's Coffee | A Strip Mall Surprise

I had to run some errands across town today, so I am camped out doing some work at Calder's Coffee in Littleton.

Location: 8966 W. Bowles Ave. Unit S, Littleton, CO 80123 (Near a Bally's health club)

Perks: Calder's Coffee has done a good job creating a nice atmosphere despite its strip mall location. By dropping the ceilings in some locations and adding warm lighting, they have made it feel less like a cookie cutter space. Among the features at Calder's are nicely tiled floors, bookshelves with a nice selection of books and board games, overstuffed couches and some comfortable chairs. Calder's offers free WiFi, which is a prerequisite for me! The overall "feel" is airy and bright. With a community board and local artwork, they appear to be working to provide a good local focus. Calder's also has two computer terminals for those who do not have a WiFi enabled laptop.

One great feature is their Latte art. I saw one that another customer ordered, and it was very impressive looking. The menu is good, and there is a decent assortment of snacks, along with sandwiches and burritos (I had a breakfast burrito, which was great!).

Overall Comments: This is a nice place. Because of the bright tealish walls, it doesn't quite have the warm coffee shop feel that I personally like, (still beats stark white walls) and they could use some louder music and perhaps some more eclectic furniture, but as a whole, this is a spot I would recommend, and the owners have done a nice job with their logo & their website. The owner is obviously passionate about coffee. Kudos to Calder's!!!

I have to agree that amid the stark wasteland of asphalt deserts and soulless strip malls, Calder's serves as a refreshing suburban respite. The owner's passion for quality coffee is apparent in every sip of "temporary art", yet strangely this gem is obscured behind a large generic COFFEE sign out front. It is worth a visit if ever you find yourself in S.W. Denver

The owner, Steve, is passionate about coffee and takes great pleasure in sharing his knowledge. I think that he makes the best espresso drinks in Denver, period. If you're interested in making (as well as consuming) better coffee, he is offering some classes starting 2/18/2006 (see his web site, www.calderscoffee.com).

If you're into great coffee, Calder's is your place. I've never had better coffee - Steve knows his stuff.

I have been here a few times. I go to the Ballys in the same area.
While The owner Steve talks a good game I don't like either the espresso or the drip coffee. I found the espresso to have an unpleasant sour character and the drip to be weak and bitter. I suspect he uses too little coffee in the pot and the espresso is probably a bad choice of blend or even a single bean.

Calder's coffee is the best, Steve is so knowledgable and fun to talk to. A group of us took the coffee 101 class and had a blast learning so much about it! I love this shop, and think that Steve makes the best in the area.

Sadly, Calder's closed its doors on June 2nd. Simply the best coffee I've had anywhere in the metro area.

This place closed a few months ago.

It's a pity that quality local coffee shops like Calder's are finding it increasingly difficult to survive in this Starbucks world.
