Common Grounds | A refreshing break in the city

Common Grounds Downtown
also see Common Grounds Highlands

It's a beautiful Saturday morning, and as usual, the work week left tasks to be completed after Friday was over. Common Grounds is proving to be a refreshing and relaxing place to sit down and get some work done.

On the corner of Wazee and 17th st in Denver, this coffee house is close to downtown, and has a nice feel to it. With bookshelves along the walls, old-looking lights hanging from the ceiling, high ceilings, numerous windows, and wood floors, Common Grounds has retained the feel of Old Denver, while creating an energetic, bright & airy atmosphere. On this saturday morning, a great energetic mix of everything from jazz to swing to opera is playing.

They have Liks ice cream, great pastries, pies, cakes & a good selection of teas. You can also select from a wide variety of beans to take home.

Perks: Location, atmosphere, Free WiFi.

Location: Common Grounds - 1601 17th St, Denver, 80202 - (303) 296-9248

the atmosphere is generally a good one but the music is usually on much too loudly to allow conversation let alone concentration to do work which is often what i go to coffee shops to do.

I was not impressed. Iced coffee was bitter and I couldn't hear myself think.

There are a lot of sexual male and female baristas. Like, sexual, in the sense that they are "sexy," like, putting off that vibe bein' all flirtatious. And the manager knows Kung Fu. Ask him to show you a few moves.

Same loathsome coffee shop, different loathsome location. The only thing left to await is which one G*d will destroy first to cleanse the earth of human wickedness. Their iniquitous management cut-corners, abuse staff, and send up a coffee odor so foul one might hope for that sweet sulfur smell. Where was Dante when the 8th level came to earth

awesome place. Been coming there for years and the poetry nights are really cool, not the typical stuff real fun. The baristas have always been nice and work real hard,

I feel compelled to respond to belladonna's post. The suits referred to in that post are their primary customer base (it's a business district for hell sake). I truley doubt that anyone with a stick up their ass would enjoy this place. The music is a bit loud and the baristas are overtly sexual at times (explains the full tip jar ;-). Great atmosphere. Thank God the employees aren't as narrow minded and judgemental as belladonna. In case you're wondering, I only wear a suit to weddings and funerals.

I like this place but they really need a bar to pick up your drinks instead of it being handed to you between the line of next customers. There isn't a good flow to ordering your drink, then picking it up. When it's not busy it's not really an issue. But when there's a line it's very awkward.

At times I have liked this place. That last time I went they served me possibly the worst chai I've had in my life--I threw it away on the way out. At its best (the chai, that is), it's no better than the marginally bad and the worst downtown. The women baristas are something else though. It's the only coffee shop in Denver you may want to watch women without underwear bend over as they serve you.

so..having engaged with the shop and its employees i have to say dan rogers (mgr.) will run the place into the ground. ami is amazing, the rest well...forget about it. coffee is ok. change of mgr. is in order. dan is a major loser. not only is he risking the profit of the place he is a lazy fuck as well as a pathetic lil man who rips ppl off he also trys to get way to close to the ladies..try to avoid the place its overpriced and overbearing..

Sorry to say, the downtown location is closed. I'll miss it.
