Penn Street Perk is just a few steps from our apartment, so it's the natural choice for my boyfriend and me when we need to study. However, we had a bad experience there last year and haven't returned since.

One night, the manager of the shop went on a harrangue about laptop users camping out in the shop without buying much more than a small coffee. We were taken aback because we felt we were good customers: always bought something, tipped well, took up as little space as possible, etc. As much as we loved the atmosphere of the Perk, we don't feel welcome there anymore.

It makes me wonder: What exactly is the etiquette at a coffee shop? I thought places with free wifi WANTED people to come hang out for a few hours.

Maybe the manager was having a bad day or something. Still, I'm not eager to go back. Too bad, because it's a cool spot.

-oh they Did did they?! i've never heard em say anythin but as i remarked on kaladi page, camping out's the whole Point of a cofhaus! even quentin crisp, in choosing to immortalize one in his How To Become A Virgin memoir of life in london, agrees:
". . .the As-You-Like-It Coffee Bar in Monmouth Street, positively the last of the layabout cafes- those marvellous places where you could sit through lunch and tea and supper without ordering anything more than one cup of coffee. . . an establishment where several times a week, either accompanied or alone, i sat for hours eating lotus petals" :)

Oh well. They have lousy coffee anyway. Style over substance. The food is good though.

the manager referred to above is no longer working there, as far as I can tell. The staff is pretty laid back, except for the pirate looking guy w/ the goatee. The coffee is decent actually, but you may need an extra shot to make it stronger. they've recently added electrical outlets along the base of the bench against the far wall, but if you're in the middle, you're out of luck. The wi-fi is somewhat slow. The baked goods are kinda dry and salty, but at least they're made by a local baker. the food is okay, but pretty expensive. I like to have coffee there, then get a burrito next door at Chipotle. Lots of good looking young women study there, for you single guys, or those who just like to look.

Obviously most of these commenters haven't a clue as to how business works... coffee-houses are not public libraries, nor are they stages where-by Romeo (hipster 1) meets Juliette (hipster 2). They are businesses like any other and in order to remain open, not to mention offer free wi-fi, they need your patronage even if it's just a small coffee.

There are however an obscene amount of poseurs who go to coffee-shops to simply take up space without buying anything just to flash their expensive Macs at the "good looking students".

As for that manager, she was out of line and is no longer working here. Come by any time and as long as you order something stay as long as you'd like.

Sincerely,
The pirates of penn perk.

I like the Perk. I usually get chai, which is good most places. I do love the gigantic cookies and am very fond of the white chocolate raspberry scones. The barista/os are always friendly.

-does that include me? if so:
"coffee-houses are not public libraries, nor are they stages where-by Romeo (hipster 1) meets Juliette"
-talk about not havin a clue; actually they kinda are Both of those things- that's always been part of their draw, especially for a place as stylin as yall's. if a place wants to emphasize in-&-out turnover their vibe should reflect that, with assembly-line speed and blank, antiseptic decor that makes one's eye skip over its surface so quickly one's mind, let alone one's body, isn't tempted to linger. of course, the resultant clientele may skew more to colorless, king-shit hummer-drivers and their high-maintenance health-club b!tches but, if that's who one Wants to serve all day, that's a Businessman's prerogative :p
of course, if you Don't mean me, "never mind" ;)

"an obscene amount of poseurs who go to coffee-shops to simply take up space without buying anything just to flash their expensive Macs"
-if you say so, but i can't recall ever witnessing such behavior anywhere myself. it seems unlikely that anyone self-conscious enough to engage in such laughable fronting wouldn't realize that sittin there with a mac and No Drink undercuts his own credibility ;D

"long as you order something stay as long as you'd like"
-ok then, fair enuf :D

I took over management of the Perk in the middle of Sept 2006 and although we are not a library, we love our computer campers. So please, come relax and chill with a cup of brew. We love you all posuers, suits, punx, and geeks alike. Hopefully some of our new changes will encourage you to let bygones be bygones and give the Pirates of Penn Street Perk a second chance. Thanks and we'll see you soon, The Captain

I love the perk. Don't listen to all these nay-sayers. The coffee's good. The staff is friendly and when there's power outlets and free wifi, what more can a girl ask for?

Oh, and to top it off, they always have great cafe food.

hi, my name is chris, and i am a new barista at the perk (1 mo.); i generally work evenings.

1) the decor is the owner's choice, and part of it has to do with the molly brown house next door. even our panini menu reflects that. so, until his tastes change, nothing we can do.

2) ...i've had people come in, get a small cup, get a refill, leave no tip, and stay until 10...but that's not the norm. i don't really care what you do as long as you don't leave behind a huge mess and other people can sit down too.

3) if you bring music that you want to hear, ask me to play it, and unless it makes my teeth itch, i will.

4) we are getting new beans soon.

so, yeah, there have been some changes...for the better...so if you have been offended, try us again...i won't yell at you unless you put your hand in my tip jar or flick your cig butts on the patio or something uncool like that...

thanks, hope to see you soon.

I really am just a regular customer.
But I'm posting this to set the record straight.
The person commenting above actually got fired for being, well, basically psychotic.
I'm glad he's gone and I've been telling the other regulars that it's safe to come out of the woods now.
The new managers have been their for a long time as regular barista's and they really know what they're doing.
A great way to spend you're free time!

Cramped, crowded, loud and lousy iced tea. Would work better as a newsstand. Just another excuse to bilk poor college kids of their money while they pay their "baristas"(Ha!) minimum wage. Patronize another Cap Hill coffee shop, or better yet, start your own.

I like the high energy 'dancing baristos' and the slightly funky feel . . . hard to find in Denver. Cute guys help too!

I just went to the Perk after not having been for a looooong time, and it has drastically improved! I had an Americano, and it was way better than it ever was before. I think they may have switched beans, because there was a huge difference! I am going to have to start going there more often now.

Nice coffee, hot and well flavored. The wait lady was charming, definitely a colorful character, just what I want in my baristas. She was bbusy cleaning, but jumped right on my order, and went back to cleaning after she filled my order. Clean, friendly, well lit. They evn have their own parking, a definite plus in Cap Hill. Only problem was they close at 6.I'd be a regular if they were til 10.

Well I started going back to Penn St Perk after a long hiatus, and was really enjoying it. HOWEVER, they have a new owner who decided to switch the coffee again, and they fired all of the people in the place that were worth anything. The cafe (especially the coffee) has gone drastically downhill. I am sad to say that the decisions being made by the new management/ ownership has turned me off of this cafe once again, and for good. Lame.

I gotta afree with the person a few comments up, the new owner has made a lot of changes, and not for the better. I still come all the time because I live a block away and its the best spot for free wi fi but I now only buy the bottled drinks and I bring my I pod. What I mean is, the music now totally sucks, whereas I used to be interested in what was playing, usually because I didn't know the band. Also, the coffee is downright disgusting. Even the chai is horrible. How do you screw up chai? So don't go for the drinks, or the music, but the food is still good and there's lots of outlets, which is the only reason I don't book it down to Panera instead.

Be wary of new owners...

I wrote a comment about this cafe a while ago, and I am sad to say my opinion has not changed since then. I went in a month or so ago (I don't know, maybe a little longer than that) and it still sucked. I wish someone else would swoop in a take this spot.
