I finally decided to check out the Gypsy House today. With the bright red wall and the mural facing Marion street, this place has made me curious every time I've gone by. It has been mentioned before that of the dozens of coffee houses listed on this site, only a portion of them really offer a truly unique atmosphere, and I must say, Gypsy House Cafe is one of them. (be sure to read the review at the bottom of this post for more on the atmosphere).

The decor is marked by tapestries on the wall, numerous plants all over the place and other decorations and wall hangings I can only assume are Turkish in origin (Or maybe not... I guess the owners are Lebanese). Anyway, very cool look and feel in this place. I counted no less than 8 different colors painted on the walls, along with overhead flourescent lights that have been tinted with various colors and designs, all adding to a nice atmosphere.

I ordered a Turkish Coffee, which is like espresso with sugar. Hard to describe, but I was told that it would "make me strong all day".
I had previously read a Turkish proverb that I now understand much more fully: "Coffee should be as black as hell, as strong as death, and as sweet as love." That says it quite well. You can also corder a Hookah with your Turkish coffee if you feel so inclined.

I also had a breakfast bagel sandwich, which was served with potato salad, all of which was excellent. I LOVE the Turkish coffee... very strong & sweet. It is so thick that you have to keep stirring it to keep the sludge from all settling at the bottom (Really, it's better than it sounds, and now, back at the office, I'm SERIOUSLY feeling the caffeine buzz).

EDIT... here's a comment pasted from below about Turkish Coffee. Thanks Rian! "BTW, the sludge is not to be drank. /smile/ A thick layer of sludgy grounds at the bottom of the cup is left behind. The cup is then commonly turned over into the saucer to cool, and then the patterns of the coffee grounds can be used for a kind of fortune telling."

They DO have free WiFi.

Here is a fun review i found on the "Chowhound" message boards:

"Gypsy House-My God do I love this coffee house. I first went there the last time I was in town, maybe three months ago. It appears to be run by mama, papa and the old gramdma, and if these people aren't extras in a movie as the "gypsy family" in a remake of Frankenstein or Dracula, someone in Hollywood is not scouting enough. Gramdmama came rushing into the shop, weeping and wailing about a traffic accident up the street, at 13th and Downing, and "there's dead people laying in the street, the blood the blood, body parts, missing limbs, dead people, blood, horrible". Pretty soon both mama and papa had joined her in the wailing and rending of garments. Turns out, it was a minor fenderbender with no injuries. God, I love high drama with my morning coffee. Mama also makes a mean latte. Her foam was the best I've had outside of Seattle." From a Message board

PS.... here's another pic of the side of the building that includes the mural (the text has been painted over, but the woman is still there. Thanks to Rad for this pic.

That quote was from William Blake, I believe, or other writer..."Coffee should be black as night, hot as hell, sweet as an angel"

FYI: Grandmama is Nomi, and she and "Ed" opened the Bonne Journee at 1800 S. Broadway. in January 06. I like this place. Yes she can be high drama, but it is just part of the culture. Man can she cook! I recommend eating there, it will be middle eastern or Italian, killer lasagna. She is Lebanese and he is Egyptian, an attorney who speaks fluent French btw. A fascinating multi-cultural couple. Also, they are only in their mid-fifties, not as old and decrepit as some have implied. They have a very comfortable place, with free wifi and cushy chairs. Well worth a visit.

It just so happened that my first taste of the delectable no sugar latte + baklava combination occurred right inside the cozy walls of the Gypsy House. Now I am hooked.

Thanks for the tip, Rian :-) I don't think I ever actually tried to drink "the sludge" - "BTW, the sludge is not to be drank. /smile/ A thick layer of sludgy grounds at the bottom of the cup is left behind. The cup is then commonly turned over into the saucer to cool, and then the patterns of the coffee grounds can be used for a kind of fortune telling."

Anyway, if you haven't tried Turkish Coffee, you'll have to check it out. the proprietor once told me (with her great accent) "Thees will make you STRONG." :-) I agree.

This is my favorite coffee house, and I've been to a lot of 'em. It's comfortable, the owners (a family) are generous, laid back, and friendly. It is a real place run by real people who have put their heart and soul into it. Kinda wish they'd cut back on the incense, since I have allergies, but after two brews of Turkish coffee, who cares? All kinds of people come through, which for me is a positive.

I love the coffee, love the people, and really, don't go there, because I don't want it to be too crowded.

I know lots about good coffee, maybe Gypsy knows how to make turkish coffee, but they know nothing about espresso. I ordered a single shot of espresso, and what came out of that machine was the worst think I ever tasted, The cup was to hot to hold, I went outside, had a little taste, wow was it hot, and it tasted like anything but espresso , did I mention no crema at all. Sorry, but I poured it all in the street.

I really tried to like this place, but the lady running it is just plain RUDE. I wont be wasting any more time here. $5 for a crappy sandwich that had slice of american cheese on it?! No thank you.

why bother

celestial seasons tea bags, crappy sandwiches consisting of boring store bought ingredients, hooka with barely any tobacco in it at all (your just smoking the coal), and rude, annoying staff. yes the atmosphere may be cool but then again i like the atmosphere at my own house where i have my own tea (thats better that celestial seasons) and can make my self a way better sandwich than their ghetto-tastic bone dry cold cut on lettuce on bread, concoctions. not to mention the coffee is complete garbage! i ordered a latte here once and was appalled to see the barista scoop old grounds off a dirty counter and proceed to dump them into the porta-filter and begin pulling my shots with them. needless to say i did not drink this horrible excuse for coffee drink.
these people are penny pinchers to the max and i cant beleive they are getting away with selling small amounts of shit for more money than would even be reasonable at a quality establishment.

Schizophrenic service.

I came here two weeks ago and really enjoyed it. I was helped by a knowledgeable young woman barista.

I'm here right now. I had trouble placing an order with the older woman behind the counter. (Perhaps the subject of so many of these comments) "A double Macchiato," I ordered. Eh? Large or Medium? "Just the two shots with the foam." Eh? Large or medium? "A macchiato is just espresso with a small spoonful of foam on it." Eh? Do you want whipped cream?

At this point, I feared she didn't understand what a macchiato was. If I may take a moment - Damn you, Starbucks! Ok, when. Then I reexplained that a macchiato is just espresso with a little foam. At the risk of sounding like Jack Nicholson ordering a chicken salad sandwich, I left it to her.

She brought me some sort of dessert cappuccino with caramel drizzled on top of it. Ok, I made the effort and tried to explain to her a few times, so I'm not going to accept this. I said, "I'm sorry, I ordered a macchiato. This isn't a macchiato." Yes, this is their macchiato. Ok, but it's not *a* macchiato. I understand if English isn't your first language, but we have to agree on mutual definitions for words to have meaning. You can't neutralize a centuries-old drink because Starbucks bastardized it and added 100 grams of sugar.

I reexplained what a macchiato is, still trying to be patient and polite as the southerner I am. She gave me a dim nod of understanding. Then she went in the back and made me a new drink. This was basically a half cup of drip coffee (or the worst espresso I've ever had) and a half cup of foam. It was closer to a cafe au lait.

Here I am, allegedly doing some work. I thought about sending it back again, but I'm skeptical she would ever be able to make it. What I can do is pass along a warning.

If you're expecting to drink what you order, this is not the place for you. On the plus side, they have whipped cream!
