Tattered Cover is a great place to hang out... independent bookstore and coffeehouse. What more can you ask for? Tattered cover has been around denver for over 30 years and now has 3 locations, including this one downtown. (the other two are in Cherry Creek on Colfax and Elizabeth and in Highlands Ranch).
During my visit, the coffee was good (they also have a good selection of tea, the usual pastry fare, and a few sandwiches & burritos to choose from) and the service was friendly. It was a bit hard to find a place to sit down, even on a Monday afternoon, and I was unable to find anywhere w/a free table where I could plug in my laptop. As a whole though, this is a great spot. With the brick walls, weathered wood floor, and exposed beam ceilings, it has a nice feel.

The customer service here is tops!
I am completely unimpressed by TC in Lodo. Customer service in inadequate and the coffee leaves a lot to be desired. The store - the coffee shop especially - is completely staffed by hipsters with attitude; they have the "I'm-better-than-you-because-I-work-in-a-coffee-shop" syndrome. The tea selection is okay, but the bottled juices that they stock are over-priced.
It's so close to where I work, but I just can't bring myself to go there. With the closure of Metropolitan Mudd a few months back, I've had to start carrying my own coffee with me.
I always go to the Coffee Shop at Tattered Cover, I'm a big fan of their TC Muffins. It's close to my office in Denver. Plus you get a punch card for free coffee, unlike at Starbucks.
