Java Moon on Broadway

Java Moon
1116 Broadway, Denver, CO
(303) 813-9650
See it on the BUZZ Map

I stopped by real quick and checked the place out. It had previously been posted they are only open until 2, but I'm not sure, so call to find out. It looked like they had a good selection of food, and plenty of seating. They also have free WiFi.

Java Moon is fantastic. The food is fresh (full menu for breakfast and lunch – think giant cinnamon rolls and hearty biscuits and gravy), the coffee is high-quality, and the atmosphere is engaging. A large, open-air window faces the hustle and bustle of Broadway – good for people-watching. The décor is beautiful, with warm yellow walls and sky-blue tiles. Check out the safe near the back of the store. It dates back to the 1890s, and no one's been able to crack it yet (as far as I know). One drawback: They open early (around 6:30 a.m.) and close early (around 2 or 3 p.m.).

May have to check it again...but went there when it first opened and it was too corporate neat for a neighborhood coffee shop. Also had terrible coffee which being somewhat of a purist I still think is an important reason to have a "coffee shop"...not just the food as mentioned by "katie" reviewer.

Stopped here last Friday morning, a particularly cold and windy May morning for Denver. Perhaps it was the weather that reminded me of Seattle (where I've also lived), but they poured me the best cup of chai I've had since moving to Colorado two years ago.

That's all I had, though I'd like to stop back for their breakfast. I also enjoyed the seating in the front window that faced the street. Too often coffee shops place you on pseudo-bar stools or expect you to read/write on tiny tables. At Java Moon I had a nice spot with the counter space to spread out on.

I've been a Java Moon customer since they opened. A loyal customer. Recently, however, they had a change in staff. Now the service is slow and I doubt their new cook has ever eaten in a real restaurant before. If/when they find a new cook, I'll be back.

Being a vegetarian, I fully appreciate the garden sandwich, its really filling, and packs tons of flavors. Not to mention that the coffee is wonderful too. Having been a loyal Java Moon patron for a ages, and now living in eastern Kazakshtan, I can say that I really miss the coffee, mango smoothie, atmosphere, and their fabulous cookies! It will be first on places to stop when I return!

(303) 813-9650 is the wrong number for this coffee shop.

FYI - the phone number posted is incorrect. The correct number is:
(303) 813-9560

I ordered an On the Downtown sandwich that was supposed to have chicken breast. There was one small strip of chicken and the sandwich was mostly made up of lettuce and cucumbers. Not worth the money at $6.95.

I'm very sad to say, Java Moon seems to have closed for good. Inexplicably, and without warning, 2 weeks ago they put a sign on the door saying they'd reopen in a few days - and then in a few days, all the windows were covered with brown paper, and yesterday I saw construction workers turning the place into a "Taste of Philly" outlet. Oh, the humanity! I loved this place because of the friendly staff, great mochas, walking distance from work, and the fact that they'd hold an account for you (I never have cash). Alas. If anyone knows what owner Jim is up to, if he plans to open somewhere else, please post it here.
