Illegal Grounds Coffee House925 E. 17th Avenue
Denver, CO 80218
"Coffee so strong, it can't be legal."
Located between Ogden and Emerson on E. 17th Avenue, Illegal grounds is in an old brick home, with a coffeehouse on the first floor and law offices upstairs. The owner is a lawyer (thus the name), and the inside of the house has a clean and professional air to it, without feeling corporate. There is a good amount of seating as well.
They serve Coda coffee, a fair trade organic coffee.
Other "perks"- Meeting space available
- Free wifi
- Snacks and sandwiches
- Flagstone patio seating
- Covered outdoor porch

This site has become so boring. I used to like to visit, but now with all the adds from google, it's difficult to load and confusing to find the correct comment link for any particular blog. There used to be good arguements, but now there is nothing. I doubt if you'll be getting any more "best of," with all the adds and lack of updating.
Quit your whining. Stop being a bystander and participate. Rather than read your trash talk, I'm heading out to get a latte at THE BEST PLACE to get one,
Starbuck's! Lot's of cool milk, a generous helping of syrup, and almost no microfoam...Perfection!
And I can get one made that way almost every where I go.
Now that's funny.
This coffee shop is really neat. I don't think it's been open long, but their coffee is awesome, so I've made it one of my new spots. I recommend it to everyone... so go try it!
i have been going to illegal grounds coffe house for a couple of weeks now, and it is great. I heard that they are having a scavenger hunt for their customers! what a great idea!
this place is a great coffe house to meet friends, or just hang out and study!
eh, its ok. the coffee is really good. It looks like a house with tables and chairs in it. the employee there ignored us while she tried to figure out paperwork. great idea, nice location. With a new Daz Bog across the street customer service will be critical.
St. Marks, Geez Louise and Gypsy House are still my top 3 picks these days. I will give Illegal Grounds a few more tries...
hey cd, curious comment about Illegal Grounds being "in a house"
with tables and chairs....well,duh,
obviously, you are not a student of architecture. That "house"
was built in 1888 by Frank J. Edbrooke, the same "guy" who designed and built other Colorado buildings like The Brown Palace, Ouray County Courthouse,
Denver Dry Goods building, and about 100 other places, many of which are now on the National Register, to name a few. Check it out at http://www.coloradohistory-oahp.org/guides/architects/edbrookef.pdf if you want to expand your horizons. And next time in, maybe some of the reported house ghosts will welcome you..... boo!
you got one thing right about this place, the customer service sucks! although, i will say that i have gone in there when some guy in glasses helped me, he was great! i couldn't stop laughing the whole time he helped me, he earns his tips for sure. the coffee is a lot better than dazbog's any day and a lot cheaper as well. they got my vote.cheers.
hey guys, this is VEGAS from Illegal Grounds. Come check out all of our upcoming events like, scavenger hunts, community bike rides, art shows and sales. not to mention DeeJay Diabolic and DJ Eric Stiltz performing in our shop.
As a matter of fact I WAS a student of architecture, which is WHY I said it looks like a house with tables and chairs in it... meaning they never took the time to make it interesting inside.
I did like that one lamp though...
Hrmm, I am a barista here at Illegal Grounds and we love our customers!
We have recently come under new management, with a whole new staff, and we place great value on customer service.
Please give it another shot, with our new, friendly crew!!
That's funny you mentioned flies. I was in there last week and there was a Dragonfly the size of a small bird flying around. I had to catch it with my bare hands and release it, because the girl there didn't care! That was the first and Last time I go there. FLUID! Actually is a lot better, and cleaner. I will say one thing about this place, the porch is great place to sit and enjoy the day. Less bugs too.
The problem with this place is that it is owned by a lawer who thought it would be cool to own a coffee shop and it would be easy to run one. I doubt thare is any history of a true love of the coffee industry in this venture.
It shows in the lack of passion these guys have in there service.
It takes more than the money to open it to actaully make it work!
Mary. Your right about no passion for their coffee, or their customers. It takes a lot more than some coffee and a brewer to make it these days. I actually got shushed by a Barrista while I was in a business meeting!! We'll be seeing this "coffeehouse" in the graveyard soon. They will be right at home with all the flies over there.
Hey, Kyle, we have no dragonflies but maybe some GHOSTS! BOO! If you caught a dragonfly, right on! Why didn't you tell someone, we could have framed it for you!
The Management
WHY ON EARTH WOULD YOU OFFER TO KILL AND FRAME A DRAGONFLY! WHAT KIND OF PLACE IS THIS? SOMEBODY NEEDS TO SERIOUSLY LOOK INTO THIS "COMPANY"! OBVIOUSLY THIS PERSON WHO RELEASED (AND NOT KILLED) THE DRAGONFLY HAS COMPASSION. UNLIKE THE MANAGEMENT OF THIS PLACE. WOW! UNBELIEVABLE! JOKING OR OTHERWISE! WOW!
I personally, and every person I talk to will NOT be going to this place. Management here looks horrible. They personally trash people on this site, and would rather kill something beautiful rather than release it? Well, good luck Illegal Grounds sounds like you will need it. Especially with It's a Grind 2 blocks away.
After reading all the comments about this place i decided to investigate this store as a potential hang out. WOW! IS all I really can say. This place sucks!!!! Some loudmouth know-it-all lawyer came down the stairs while I was there, and loudly discussed his personal issues with whoever would listen. the Barista got confused whrn I ordered an iced no water americano and had to call someone to figure it out! The Barista's here are DUMB! Obviously there has been no training here. This place is definetly NOT a place to go if you like your coffee done right.
HORRIBLE CUSTOMER SERVICE! Coffee tastes like they need to clean out their urns. Pastries were stale and barely edible. Some blonde girl helped me this weekend and was so damn fake that I couldn't stand listening to her BS. Good GOD! This place will not last with the crap the serve as "food".
I had an awful experience at this shop. The barista was extraordinarily rude. She took my money then didn't make the drink. She served 2 other customers, chatted with another worker, then made my drink - which was AWFUL. I will never go back here and I wouldn't encourage anyone too. There's lots of coffee shops in Denver and this place sucks.
Horrible baristas. i thought i read how nice they are. Not to me. The barista actually laughed at me and told me my drink was "lame". I really don't care if you like my drink. Just make ie, Take my money and shut the hell up about how "lame" you may think my drink is.
I just moved to Denver a couple months ago, and have made Illegal Grounds one of my regular stomping grounds. I don't know what other customers have experienced with rude staff-- every time I've been there I've enjoyed my interactions with the baristas. Their coffee is nice and strong, and affordable. I would highly recommend checking them out!
I love this place! Jeez guys, give 'em a break! People expect wayyyyy toooo much these days. It takes a lot to get a business going. I know some of the baristas have to work double shifts until they can find more employees to cover the new hours! The coffee is fantastic, the home is beautiful, the rotating artwork is fresh and fun, and the help might just need a smile from you! Relax--maybe ya'll should drink decaf! The world's tough enough without everyone's griping! Enjoy your life!! :)
Yikes! I guess I'm lucky I haven't had the bad experiences some others have had. Personally, I think the "house" is pretty dang neat- I've always been served great coffee and I really like the atmosphere. Baristas could possibly use a tad more training, but what do you expect when the true barista is a dying breed?
Illegal Grounds could have been a great shop -- they have the cool house, the simple set up, and the laid-back atmosphere. It used to be pretty good, back in the summer.
I've been back recently and I have to say that whoever cited the "loud mouthed lawyer" who owns it was right on -- he has no sense of customer service and no business sense and it shows in the shop. It doesn't seem like anyone there cares.
Erratic hours, constantly changing layout, stale food, poor coffee training, lack of follow through. Illegal Grounds should cut their losses and get on out of the neighborhood.
I love French coffee! It's the best for me!
Maybe they would have better baristas if they didn't terrify everyone they interviewed. Yes, I interviewed there and it was horrible. They treated me like an ididot, told me I was hired, then said "come in in a couple of weeks if we forget to call you with your schedule". Of course they didn't call and I never went back. I would never go there for coffee, especially when Watercourse and Dazbog are so close, and I've never had a problem with either of those places.
I think the fact that you would even CONSIDER going to Dazcorp over Illegal grounds or St. Marks may have played a role in your not being hired at one of the best indie shops in the city...
I haven't tried it yet. Do they have any live music? Is it busy on Friday or Saturday nights? I looking to play some acoustic music out...
Oh my gahd! I just tried their Bhakti spicy Chai and it blew me away! I can't find it anywhere else in the city and it was so good I got it hot the first day and came back the next day to try it iced. the ginger bits are a bit different, but i absolutely love it!
This shop is my one stop chai shop!
I LOVE THIS SHOP!!! They've REALLY come up since all those nasty blogs were written in the fall. Apparently they've been under new management since January and have been doing a GREAT job! the hours are regular now (8:30-8:30, closed on mondays) and the baristas are AWESOME! They've been rotating their art regularly and have even had a few comedy nights. Don't give up on this shop. They're seriously, SUPERB!!
I had a bad experience at this place back in October and had never came back until the other day walking by I decided to see if there was any improvement or decline. To my surprise, there was quite a bit of improvement. New patio set-up and the art was fairly impressive. I had the chai (and agree with "anonymous"... it was excellent), and a veggie breakfast burrito which was surprisingly scrumptious. The barista who helped me was pretty enthusiastic and seemed to enjoy his job and coffee. Pretty happy I went back, and will be stopping by again. Not to mention eco-friendly cups-always a plus in my book.
Love the gnome!
Throw up!
This place stinks, bad customer service, bad food, and really bad coffee. They know it and just don't care, nothing has changed, its still weird and out of place, not a real part of the community, just cancer growing out of it. Please just close your doors and let someone else do a better job. PLEASE.
I like this place a lot.
The coffee is good. No one is chatting on cell phones or bothering anyone. The music is pleasant and played at a reasonable volume. (Built to Spill, Joy Division, etc.)
The barista seems nice and helpful enough too. It's probably not gourmet or whatever, but it's very cool nonetheless.
