I guess I can now safely judge what people mean when they say a place is "funky". As a commercial interior designer with experience designing hospitality and retail facilities, I always thought a description of "funky" meant the place was hip, somewhat off-the-wall, and maybe utilized furniture and finishes in creative or unexpected ways. Now I know that (on this blog, at least) "funky" means it is dirty and in a state of near-disrepair.

I was nervous to even sit back against the chair I was sitting on for fear of needing a de-lousing later on. An empty mug that had not yet been cleared from my table was chipped around the rim. The footstool in the front is actually leaking stuffing, and a chair cushion is torn to the point of nearly coming apart.

The front door is broken. It looks like it's been broken for a long time. It's taped together with duct tape. If this place is so successful and has customers on a regular basis, why can't they afford to fix the door? That's the first thing their customers are seeing. Not really a very good first impression, IMO.

I understand the desire to have a place that looks "lived in" or furniture that is "distressed". But Monkey Bean's furniture looks like it was picked up from the curb on trash day. And there is never a good reason to serve people from cups that could cause injury.

I tried to log on to the internet, but my computer's wireless connection said "connected at 11 Mbps, Signal: excellent". Really? 11 Mbps? I had a faster connection when the internet became readily available to the public back in the early 90s. It was so slow, in fact, that I couldn't even get yahoo.com to load. It seems a wi-fi connection that slow is worthless, so why bother?

The coffee was quite good. The ice cream was divine. I did not have any of the other food they offered, mostly because I was afraid there were bugs infesting the kitchen - I didn't see any, but the public part of the place looked dirty and I couldn't imagine the kitchen being any better.

Overall, not a good experience. Perhaps they should open a drive-through. I'd go back for the coffee if I didn't have to experience the "atmosphere" they provide.Lucynoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-13310669.post-1148998677238004242006-05-30T08:17:00.000-06:002006-05-30T08:17:00.000-06:00The extraction time for the shot is the correct wa...The extraction time for the shot is the correct way to pull the perfect shot, however depending on the type of machine (single boiler, double boiler, other factors) the time can be from 18 seconds to 22 seconds (most single boiler machines) to 28-30 seconds most double boiler machines.Johnnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-13310669.post-1148136817005168712006-05-20T08:53:00.000-06:002006-05-20T08:53:00.000-06:00Anyone who thinks the perfect shot takes 18 secs w...Anyone who thinks the perfect shot takes 18 secs works at Starbucks, where machines control the barista rather than the barista controlling the machine.
